Surf Knight v2.0 is out!

Hi all,

Back in December 09′ we said that something big is coming. Well, with a little delay we are finally launching Surf Knight v2.0. While we are working on preparing the web site for SurfKnight v2.0, we thought it would be a good idea to make the new version available for download (both on surfknight.com and download.com).

So what’s new?

SurfKnight web browser was revamped from bottom up. From 3 new choices of skin to Text-to-speech capabilities, version 2.0 is packed with new features. Version 2.0 also includes user management up to 3 users. Parents will now be able to configure different settings for each user account, controlling their children’s online activity with more precision.

At Surf Knight, we are passionate about making our browser better and more useful. We have already started on developing new features, which will be available to all premium users with no extra charge. The subscribed users simply will need to download the newer version, and use their existing accounts. All of their settings will be carried over with no hassle!

While working on our “next-big-thing” day and night, we thought it would be cool to release this minor revision. So what’s new? We have changed the browser header to read “Surf Knight” so that web masters, and site designers will know that their sites are being visited by Surf Knight (rather than Internet Explorer). While from our users’ point of view this change will not be substantial at first glance, it will give web masters a chance to identify Surf Knight users, and enhance their web experience.

A minor revision update to our Web Browser, some changes to our web site, followed by Surf Knight v2.0 -a brand new browser built from bottom up!

We have been busy trying to make the browsing experience a great one, while ensuring that we have a sustainable business model. Surf Knight Web Browser has always been a free-to-download product, and we will continue this tradition. 90% of all features of Surf Knight v2.0 will still be free with no time limitation, while we will be asking a small premium fee for the remaining 10% of the features. We chose this free and a premium version (freemium) approach to be able to sustain our activities while reaching to a broader user base. More is more is more! More users will eventually translate into much better products!

Since our launch in 2006, I received various e-mails telling me that a web browser for kids is such a great idea, and asking me how they could help. Our new site will offer cool merchandise from T-shirts to coffee mugs (and if you are like us, you can never get enough of coffee mugs!). We will also be integrating an Amazon.com applet to our main site which will give you great ideas for Xmas and birthday gifts for your loved ones. Amazon.com will be paying us a commission for all the items bought through our site, with no extra cost to you! Of course, all this merchandise and product suggestions are to be limited to our main site, which is targeted for parents use. The Web Browser, and our Search Engine will still be ad-free.

So stay tuned for a minor revision to Surf Knight Web Browser and to our Web Site by late November, and the release of our brand new browser, Surf Knight v2.0, by early December!

We are compatible with IE 8 !

As some of you might have noticed, Surf Knight uses Internet Explorer’s engine (aka Trident) to view the web pages. Why IE? -some of the critics asked. And the answer lies in the numbers. IE still has the greatest market share in the educational space, and therefore almost all of the sites designed for children are made compatible to IE.

How does Surf Knight incorporates Internet Explorer?
Surf Knight uses the IE engine installed on your Operating System. In plain English, if you use IE 6.0 Surf Knight uses IE 6′s engine, if you use IE 7.0 Surf Knight uses IE 7′s engine, and if you have recently upgraded to IE 8.0 -well it’s no surprise now is it?- Surf Knight uses IE 8!

Our initial test showed complete support for IE 8.0. Please help us improve Surf Knight by submitting a ticket through our support page if you experience any issues.

Why upgrade to IE 8.0?
For starters, IE8 is the only Internet Explorer that passes the Acid 2 test, which shows that its compliance with web standards. It is also more secure and has better JavaScript support.

Server outages in March

There has been intermittent server outages between 03/14/09 and 03/18/09 due to unexpected increase in Browser and search engine usage.

We are glad to see that Surf Knight is gaining increased popularity and our Dev team has made structural improvements in order to assure continuous service to our users.

Surf Knight version 1.5 is out!

Hey There!

Surf Knight web browser got even better! The version 1.5 includes a new protection feature named “Auto Block Explicit Content”. The Auto Block checks the sites visited against our list of “black listed” sites. Our intelligent crawlers periodically update this list to ensure that it’s current. The parents can still add their list of blocked sites through “Block these pages” option.

We encourage all of our exsiting users to upgrade to version 1.5!

Surf Knight appeared on Mass High Tech, The journal of New England technology on its November 28^th weekly issue. Surf Knight’s Founder CTO, Metin Kandiyoti answered questions about company’s current state and its expansion goals.

Mass High Tech is a weekly publication covering business news of the New England high tech industry. MHT is a subsidiary of American City Business Journals, the United States’ largest publisher of metropolitan weekly business and technology newspapers, with more than 40 publications nationwide.

Introducing the First Meaning Based Search Engine FOR KIDS!

First of all, I’d like to start by thanking all those who tested our products, wrote reviews and sent us valuable feedbacks. We take every feedback, every issue report and every search quarry into account when making strategic decisions.

Surf Knight Search Engine was first launched in March 2008 as a text-matching search engine. We soon realized that our users tended to ask questions like “What is the biggest fish in the ocean?” or “Who is the queen of England?” rather than just searching for key words. These search phrases often resulted in little or no results. Thus we decided to develop the first meaning based search engine designed for kids!

What is a meaning based search engine?

A meaning based search engine does not only match keywords. It knows the difference between “swimming” and “swimming pool”. It knows that the word “race” may also mean “competition” or “contest”. After the search is executed, the results are listed in the order of relevance. All this is in less than half a second (0.4 seconds to be exact!)

How is it different than searching in Google or Yahoo?

The difference is in the results!
